Finding Resilience After Adversity
Resiliency is the process of re-establishing balance after adversity.
What comes to mind when you think of the word “resilience”?
Do certain characteristics, such as physical strength or mental fortitude, stand out in your mind? Are there certain actions that you expect resilient person to do? Can you think of people in your life that embody resiliency?
Many people think that a resilient person is someone who is impervious to adversity—That no matter what happens to them, they are strong, un-phased, unaffected. But this is NOT true.
Others think that a person is either resilient or not. That resiliency is an innate, inborn, natural trait and that you either have it or you don’t. Again, this is NOT true.
Luckily research is clear. Experts (Conn, 2018, pg 3) agree on three key aspects:
Resiliency is a process,
Resiliency requires commitment,
Resiliency requires daily actions in service of this commitment.
This means that anyone can become resilient. When resiliency is well-conditioned and trained, it can buffer the impact of adversity and help to restore balance in your life. If you are ready to build resilience call us today.
